29TH ANNUAL BIG PRO

TOURNAMENT RULES

  1. This tournament is just for fun (includes minor bragging rights, but only when won the right way)!

  2. The tournament consists of two (4-team groups). Each group will play a round robin format to determine standings. The top two teams in each group will play a semi-final round to determine who will play in the consolation rounds and who will play in the championship round.

  3. The games are from Monday to Friday.

  4. Games are at the John Rhodes Arena, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

  5. The winning team will receive an engraved team trophy (they must get it engraved themselves), which they will hold for the year. There are no cash prizes.

  6. Cost of entry will be $800.00 per team, to cover the cost of ice rental, referees, timekeepers and social, and charity donation.

  7. Slow-puck rules are strictly enforced. No body contact, no slapshots (i.e. stick not allowed above the knee), etc., approved helmets and face shields. (Note: Helmets and face shields must be worn for the entire game; any violation of this rule will result in an immediate lifetime expulsion from the tournament, plus a major penalty to the offending team.)

  8. All games will consist of two (2) 10-minutes stop time periods, plus one (1) 12-minute stop time period, the third period.

  9. Each player must assume responsibility for his own insurance and liabilities. Each player shall sign the tournament waiver before playing.

  10. Only members of their respective Associations, or those directly eligible for admission into their Associations, are eligible to play. One exception being that goalies may be picked up, provided that they are 21 years of age or older. Teams may apply to the organizing group for permission to use certain non-association players under extreme circumstances. Should a team use an ineligible player they will forfeit the game(s) and the offended team(s) will be awarded a 3-0 win, and two points.

  11. Any violence or impression of violence, as perceived by the officials will result in expulsion from the game and possibly the tournament. Fighting, spearing, charging, deliberate high sticking, even verbal sparring will constitute such an infraction and will include its applicable penalty time to be served by someone else on the ice at the time of the infraction, in addition to the game/tournament expulsion for the offending player. 5 minute penalty rule: any player who receives a total of 5 minutes of penalties in any game will be ejected from that game. A 10 minute misconduct will result in ejection from the game and a review by the organizing committee to determine if offending player should be ejected from the remainder of the tournament and/or subject to an indefinite suspension. Any player kicked out of the game by the referee (except for the 5 minute penalty rule) may not be allowed to play for the rest of the tournament at the discretion of a majority of the tournament committee and/or subject to an indefinite suspension.

  12. Points: Win: 2 points; Tie: 1 point; Loss: 0 points

  13. Tie Breaker - should two, or more teams be tied at the completion of the round-robin portion of the tournament, the following will be used to break the tie, in the order shown:
    1. Record between the teams.
    2. Differential between goals for and against over the three games, with a maximum difference of plus or minus 3 per game as per the following examples:
      • 3-2 win (+1 for the winner, -1 for the loser)
      • 8-1 win (+3 for the winner, -3 for the loser)
    3. The team with the fewest goals against.
    4. The team with the least penalty minutes.
    5. The team with the earliest goal scored in any of their three round-robin games.

  14. Only players registered with the tournament Committee before the start of the first game will be eligible to play in the tournament. Minimum age 21 years as of tournament date.

  15. An alternate goaltender is supplied from preceding or following game as applicable.

  16. All team managers must check-in and register with the tournament Committee before their first game.

  17. The ice is resurfaced after each game.

  18. When two teams have similar colours, the one which has their colour registered with the tournament committee longest will have priority. It is preferred that each team has alternate sweaters. If the dispute cannot be resolved, the team with approval to wear the colour wins the game by default with a score of 3-0.

  19. Only registered players, teams officials and tournament officials are allowed in the team dressing rooms. Teams must vacate the dressing rooms within 20 minutes of the completion of the games.

  20. You cannot protest any call or decision.

  21. In round-robin play, games tied after regulation time will remain tied. In the FINAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME ONLY, the game if tied will be broken by sudden death overtimes. Each team will play with 3 skaters for a 2-minute period. If this does not resolve the match, the teams will be reduced to two skaters each for an additional 2-minute period. Then one skater each for an additional 2-minute. At this point, if a winner is not found then penalty shots will be taken following the soccer format. During overtime all penalties are settled by sending the penalized player to the penalty box, and adding a new player to each team (i.e. the offended team will have one extra player).

  22. Each game will start with a 3-minute warm-up, after which one minute will be placed on the clock, any team not ready to start play at the end of the one-minute will be assessed a two minute penalty for delay of game. Two more minutes will be placed on the clock and if the team is still unable to start after the two minutes they will be deemed as forfeiting, and their opponent wins by a 3-0 score.
